The committee, headed by former Chief Justice of India J S Verma, which had invited suggestions from members of the public.

The three-member committee was set up following the widespread anger across the country over the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl in Delhi on the night of December 16 by six men in a moving private bus.

The other members of the committee are Ms Justice (Retd) Leila Seth, former Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh HIgh Court, and Mr Gopal Subramaniam, former Solicitor General of India.

 

The release said that the committee, at its meeting today, took note of the way forward. It appealed to all members of the public who are interested in making any suggestions to do so without any reservations before January 5.

In the event there are persons who would like, for personal reasons, that their identity be kept confidential, they may clearly indicate so, the release said.

The written responses may be sent to the committee by way of email (to justice.verma@nic.in) or by fax (to 011-23092675). 

 

"The committee interprets the Terms of Reference as wide enough to include connected areas such as gender justice, respect towards womanhood, and ancillary matters,"

The committee has been asked to submit its report within 30 days.
