Your Gmail account's password isn't just for Gmail. Gmail's password is shared by all the other Gmail applications such as Google Docs, youtube etc. So when it comes to secure your Gmail password extra concern must be taken. Gmail provides you a unique password verification feature that makes your Gmail password more robust and hack proof. This feature is known as "Two-Step Verification." This feature allows you to enable two step account verification process before your login to your Gmail account. Once you login to your Gmail account using this feature, Gmail enables you to login with the same PC for next 30 days without any verification. (this feature is optional). Two-Step Verification allows you to login from selected PCs into your Gmail account.

As per Google, 2-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your Google Account.  Besides, your username and password, you'll have enter an unique code to sign in to your Gmail account. This uniques code will be generated to your cell phone via text or a voice message once you initiate signing process.

Let us learn how to secure your Gmail account and add Two-Step Verification

How to Set up Two-Step Verification:

  • Login to your Gmail account.
  • Go to your Google Account Settings.
  • On the Account Settings page, search for "2-Step Verification" and click "edit" option to turn it on.
  • Before you proceed further, please have your cell phone/mobile with you and ready.
  • You need to set up your mobile phone to receive unique codes via SMS text message or through a voice call over your mobile phone. You can also download the app and use over your cell phone, if you have a smart-phone (app enabled cell phone).
  • Complete the next few steps to register your mobile phone for Two-Step Verification. Gmail will verify your mobile phone by sending SMS text message. Enter the code to verify your mobile phone.

Once this feature is enabled, to access your Gmail you will always require the password, and Gmail unique code that will be delivered to you via your cell phone.  If you wish Gmail to remember your computer for login, (so that it doesn't asks u to verify Two Step Verification for next consecutive 30 days)  check the option that says "remember me for 30 days on this device"

Even if you lost your cell phone or you don't have your cell phone with you, you can use Two Step Verification and easily login to your Gmail account. Google offers multiple ways to generate Two Step Verification codes. You can add a secondary backup phone or you can print the single-use verification codes.
